Workshop “Child Protection & Sports”

CHILD PROTECTION & SPORTS WORKSHOP FOR FOOTBALL COACHES

Within the initiative “School Programme 2013” and in conjunction with the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Football League (BSSFL) and UNICEF The Brewster Trust invited all Secondary Schools to a workshop “Child Protection & Sports”. 24 secondary schools’ football coaches, PE teachers or other people in schools involved in football attended.

After some welcome remarks from Adrian Mapp, President Barbados Secondary Schools’ Football League, Axel Bernhardt, C.E.O. The Brewster Trust, and Elaine King, Adolescent & HIV/AIDS Specialist UNICEF, Dr. Lisa McClean-Trotman, Communication for Development Specialist of UNICEF, presented a workshop overview.

In the first session Heather Stewart, Child Protection Specialist of UNICEF, reported about Child Protection within the context of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Colin St. Hill, Senior Child Abuse Officer at the Child Care Board, proceeded with the topic “Safeguarding Our Children – Child Protection and football”. Finally Psychologist Nicole Lynch, SPBMP Consultant to the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology & Innovation, covered “Positive behavioural support for players on the field”. The constant feedbacks and discussions on the part of the coaches completed an active workshop. All participants had been invited for lunch after the four hours programme.
