Holiday Camp 2012

After a successful Inaugural Football Holiday Camp 2011 where THE BREWSTER TRUST hosted nearly 400 campers in the month of July 2011, we are back with the Football Holiday Camp 2012 – bigger, better, longer & spectacular. We analysed the feedbacks, did our homework and present a programme with longer courses, proven standards and new features. The Football Holiday Camp 2012 is for girls AND for boys AND for children with disabilities – football for everyone. It will take place from 2nd July to 31st August 2012 as a varying programme on weekdays for a total of nine weeks.

Organiser

The Football Holiday Camp 2012 is organised by THE BREWSTER TRUST, a registered Charity in Barbados. The trust’s mission is to promote, develop and improve football in Barbados with the aim of creating opportunities at all levels, especially for the youth. To impart the qualities of leadership, loyalty, sportsmanship, competitive ambition and the drive for academic excellence as well as discipline, fair play and respect is our ultimate goal, just as the fruitful co-operation with all national and international football stakeholders.

Coaches

The coaches at the camp are alumni of Arsenal FC’s Gap Year Programmes 2011/2012. The Gap Year is open for young men and women over the age of 17. At the beginning of the programme Gap Year youngsters gain valuable qualifications in coaching, refereeing, first aid, child protection and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) whilst spending time coaching and teaching in local schools and community soccer schools in and around north London in order to build up confidence levels. THE BREWSTER TRUST is a partner of Arsenal FC and the Gap Year Programmes 2010 to 2013.
The coaching course is held by Tony David, an experienced Arsenal coach who runs the BTEC programme which is a two year diploma in coaching football. The Gappers are under the special guidance of Nathaniel P. Brewster, Vice-President and co-founder of THE BREWSTER TRUST.

Coaching course for football coaches

One approach of THE BREWSTER TRUST is to have qualified and experienced people who are dedicated to football and are willing to share their know-how. Arsenal’s approach fits perfectly with this philosophy. Taking the examples of Israel or Kenya, Arsenal in the Community has recruited, year by year, several gap year students to coach football. This is what THE BREWSTER TRUST sees as one important element towards coaching the coaches.
Beside the coaching week from 2nd to 6th July 2012 the participants are invited to assist the Gappers for the following eight weeks on a weekly or a permanent basis to put into action what they’ve learnt. Each coach must be available for the training week and should be available for at least one additional “Holiday Camp” week.
In last year’s camp the most outstanding participant at the coaching course had been awarded a coaching participation at the Arsenal Gap Year programme for one month. THE BREWSTER TRUST selected two coaches, Tito Beckles and Kirk Corbin, who will be with Arsenal FC the full month of August 2012.

“No sweet without sweat“
The most outstanding participant at the coaching course 2012, selected by the Organiser, will also be awarded a coaching participation at the next Arsenal Gap Year programme for one month which includes accommodation in England as well as travel costs.

Three age groups

The two-weeks programmes are all about the youth. The training sessions are age group and performance related and following THE BREWSTER TRUST’s mission it is football for everyone straight from the beginner, full of fun and surprises.
Coaching in several groups – coaches are assigned to groups to encourage familiarity with the young people. The coaches will work with that same group over the course of each two-weeks.
Coaching elements will be multifarious with a daily competition based on the session, basic passing techniques developing the range and accuracy of the players, developing the players’ basic dribbling and turning techniques like dribbling at speed, slalom dribbling, dribbling with turns incorporated, control sessions and heading sessions including aerial control with the focus on using various parts of the body like feet, knees or chest, basic techniques of shooting with a development focused on shooting with various parts of the strong and the weak feet, 3 vs 2 and 4 vs 3 shooting sessions and mini matches or a tournament at the end of the two weeks. This will be followed by presentations to all players as well as “Player of the Two-Weeks” and “Fair Play” awards being handed out.
We have been asked to extend the duration, so we doubled it and are offering two two-weeks programmes for each age group which allow more children the opportunity to participate. When you register for the camp you have to choose only one group. It is possible to attend another two weeks, but only if space is available.

Venue

The Football Holiday Camp will be held at the football field at Queen’s College, Husbands, St. James; security, drop-off and pick-up zones as well as parking are organised; venue partner Queen’s College provides changing rooms, toilets and bathrooms – and of course a “lost and found”. We don’t want to miss to thank Principal Dr. Browne and his team for the hospitality and the generous support.

Schedule

The camp opens on Mondays to Fridays from 8.00 am (earliest drop off) to 4.00 pm (latest pick up) for the age groups 5 – 9 years and 10 – 14 years; the sessions start punctually at 9.00 am and end at 3.30 pm. Besides drinking and fruit breaks all participants will have lunch together.

Lunch, snack & drinks

Mens sana in corpore sano – a healthy mind in a healthy body.
THE BREWSTER TRUST developed a special meal plan for the Football Holiday Camp 2012 with typical football food like vegetable rice, spaghetti, grilled fish, steamed vegetables and fresh juices for lunch with fruit breaks between the sessions or healthy snacks for the evening sessions.
Camp Partner Barbados Bottling Company takes care of appropriate beverages like isotonic Powerade.

Insurance coverage

For every registered participant THE BREWSTER TRUST is contracting insurance cover with a special sport package for the duration of the camp.

Career history: – August 2011- Present: Community Coaching Internship at Arsenal FC – September 2007- July 2008:  PE Technician at Borden Grammar School
Education: – September 2008- July 2011: Brunel University, BSc second class (upper division) honours in Sport Sciences (Physical Education) – September 2002- July 2007: Borden Grammar School
Football Experience: The Arsenal Gap programme has been a major part of my football resume, however I have been involved in football from the age of eight. I have always been within the first 11 within all my teams and in my early years was captain. At the age of 14-15, my team did the double going unbeaten in both the league and the cup. When I was 16 I moved to a reserve men’s semi-pro Saturday side and have played at this level until now. When I went to University I was part of the football club and played games every Wednesday in the University 2nd and 3rd divisions. As part of my Sport Sciences degree I focussed on coaching different abilities and in different environments. Through training I had access to a wide range of coaching knowledge from my coaches: a former Chelsea player and the Brentford ladies manager, which improved my knowledge as a player and in the game. I have played reserve football for Sittingbourne FC, Ashford Town FC and Whitstable FC all semi-professional sides.
Football Qualifications: – FA Level 1 Coaching Badge – Covered the fundamentals of coaching football with a slight weighting towards coaching young people. Prior to passing and completing the course, I delivered an assessed session to a satisfactory standard. – FA Qualifications in First Aid and Safeguarding children – Essential training in initial assessment and treatment of injuries common in football matches and training sessions and training on important aspects of Child protection. – FA Small Sided referee – Short referee course outlining the laws of the game and how small sided games are officiated. Allows for more structure within small sided games during coaching sessions.
